Cardiovascular complications of psoriasis: does obstructive sleep apnoea play a role?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sir, There are considerable data to suggest that patients with psoriasis are at greater risk of developing diabetes, obesity, heart insu¤ciency and occlusive vascular disease than non-psoriatic dermatological patients (1 ^ 3). It has been hypothesized that clot formation following abnormal arachidonic acid and cyclic nucleotide metabolism or blood hyperviscosity in psoriasis might be responsible for the increase in susceptibility of the psoriatic population to occlusive vascular disease (2 ^ 4). Since occlusive vascular disease, heart insu¤ciency and obesity are also related to obstructive sleep apnoea (5), which is the most common organic sleep disorder, especially in middleaged obese men aged 35 years and over and women aged 50 years and over (6), we were interested in the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in patients with psoriasis.

متن کاملWhat role do adrenoreceptor polymorphisms play in modifying cardiovascular responses in obstructive sleep apnoea?
OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea) is a common condition that is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. It is remains unclear what role OSA plays in determining cardiovascular risk. The immediate physiological changes that occur during upper airway obstruction are potential contributors to cardiovascular risk in OSA. These changes include increased sympathetic activity, which is responsiv...
متن کاملCardiovascular disease in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome: the role of intermittent hypoxia and inflammation.
There is increasing evidence that intermittent hypoxia plays a role in the development of cardiovascular risk in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) through the activation of inflammatory pathways. The development of translational models of intermittent hypoxia has allowed investigation of its role in the activation of inflammatory mechanisms and promotion of cardiovascular disease in OSAS...
متن کاملAmbulatory monitoring in the diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disorder associated with complications such as arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and traffic accidents. The resources allocated for OSA are insufficient and OSA is a significant public health problem. Portable recording devices have been developed for the detection of OSA syndrome and have proved capable of providing an equivalen...
متن کاملSerum adipocyte-fatty acid binding protein level is elevated in severe OSA and correlates with insulin resistance.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. There is evidence that adipocyte-fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP) may be involved in the development of cardiometabolic dysfunction. The present authors hypothesise that A-FABP is upregulated in OSA. A total of 124 males without hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia or cardiovascular disea...
